GRP Roofing

GRP Fibreglass Roofing Installation in Berkshire & Hampshire

Berks & Hants Roofing installs GRP (fibreglass) flat roofs across Berkshire, Hampshire and Wiltshire, including Reading, Newbury, Andover, Southampton and Swindon. GRP is a seamless, jointless roofing system applied as a liquid resin that cures into a single solid, waterproof surface — making it one of the most durable and lowest-maintenance options for garages, extensions, dormers and garden rooms. Our roofs are fitted by our own directly-employed team and come with a written guarantee.

What Is GRP Roofing?

GRP stands for Glass Reinforced Plastic — also known as fibreglass roofing. It’s built up on site from layers of glass-fibre matting saturated with polyester resin, finished with a protective UV-stable topcoat. Once cured, it forms one continuous, joint-free waterproof membrane bonded directly to the roof deck, rather than a series of overlapping sheets or rolls. Because there are no seams or joints, GRP is significantly less prone to the leaks that affect felt and some membrane roofing systems.

Benefits of GRP Fibreglass Roofing

Long Lifespan

A correctly installed GRP roof typically lasts 25-30 years, and well-maintained systems can perform for even longer. Most manufacturers guarantee a minimum of 20 years.

Seamless, Leak-Resistant Finish

Because the surface is laid as a single continuous layer rather than joined sheets, there are no seams for water to find its way through — the most common failure point in felt and some membrane roofs.

Low Maintenance

Once cured, GRP is inert — it won’t rot, corrode or degrade in the way timber-based or bituminous coverings can. It needs little more than an annual visual check and clear gutters.

Strong and Walkable

GRP forms a rigid, hard-wearing surface that can take foot traffic, making it a practical choice for roof terraces, balconies and roofs that need occasional access for maintenance.

Fast Installation

Most domestic GRP roofs (garages, extensions, dormers) are completed within [1-3 days], weather permitting, since there’s no lengthy drying time between coats once conditions are right.

Where GRP Roofing Is Used

GRP is one of the most widely fitted flat roofing systems in the UK today, and is particularly well suited to:

  • Garages and outbuildings
  • Home extensions
  • Dormer roofs
  • Balconies and roof terraces
  • Garden rooms and offices
  • Porch roofs

Our GRP Roofing Installation Process

1. Deck Preparation — The roof deck is checked, repaired where needed, and overlaid with OSB3 boards to provide a stable, secure base for the fibreglass system.

2. Trims and Edge Detailing — Edge trims, upstands and drip details are fitted first to give the roof clean, weathertight edges and a professional finish.

3. Matting and Resin Application — Glass-fibre matting is laid across the deck and saturated with catalysed polyester resin, which cures into a single solid, waterproof layer with no joints.

4. Topcoat — A UV-stable, coloured topcoat is applied over the cured laminate. This protects the fibreglass from sunlight degradation and gives the roof its final, weatherproof finish.

5. Inspection — Once cured, we check the roof for a sound finish, correct falls for drainage, and hand over your written guarantee.

Note: GRP must be laid in dry conditions above a minimum temperature (around 5°C), as both the resin and topcoat need the right conditions to cure properly — this is why installation timing can depend on the weather.

GRP Roofing Cost

GRP roofing typically costs more per m² than felt but less over its lifetime, since it lasts significantly longer and needs less maintenance.

Your exact price will depend on:

  • Roof size and access
  • Whether the deck needs repair or replacement
  • Whether insulation is being upgraded (warm roof build-up)
  • Number of upstands, trims and roof lights involved

GRP vs EPDM vs Felt Roofing

GRP fibreglass: Seamless and jointless, highly durable (25-30+ years), walkable, low maintenance, higher upfront cost.

EPDM rubber: Large sheet sizes reduce joints, flexible, good on uneven decks, typically 25-50 year lifespan, mid-range cost.

Felt (built-up): Lowest upfront cost, suited to sheds, garages and budget projects, shortest lifespan at around 10-15 years, more joints and higher long-term maintenance.

We can advise which system suits your roof, budget and how long you plan to stay in the property.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does a GRP fibreglass roof last?

A professionally installed GRP roof typically lasts 25-30 years, and can last longer with basic annual maintenance such as keeping gutters clear. Most manufacturers guarantee a minimum of 20 years.

Q: Is GRP roofing better than felt?

A: For most projects, yes — GRP is seamless, more durable and lower maintenance than felt, though it costs more upfront. Felt remains a reasonable choice for lower-budget projects like sheds where a shorter lifespan is acceptable.

Q: Can GRP roofing be walked on?

A: Yes, GRP forms a rigid, hard-wearing surface suitable for occasional foot traffic, which is why it’s often used for roof terraces and balconies as well as garages and extensions.

Q: How long does it take to install a GRP roof?

A: A typical domestic GRP roof, such as a garage or small extension, usually takes [1-3 days] to install, weather permitting, since the resin and topcoat need dry, mild conditions to cure properly.

Q: Does a GRP roof need maintenance?

A: GRP needs very little maintenance once cured — mainly an annual visual check and keeping gutters and drainage outlets clear of debris to prevent standing water.

Q: Can you repair a damaged GRP roof, or does it need replacing?

A: Localised damage to a GRP roof, such as a crack or impact mark, can usually be repaired without replacing the whole roof, provided the deck underneath is still sound. We assess this during a free inspection.
